She worked at Selfridges in London before she married. She into a branch of what used to be Suffolk farmers. She married Edward Gideon Clutten on 26 March 1921. They ran a guest house in Clacton on Sea but were bombed out in the Second World War. The guest house was destroyed and they were seriously injured and sent to recuperate in Leamington Spa, Warwickshire. They never moved back to Clacton.
